The Tres Palacios Creek is impaired due to elevated bacteria levels in the tidal sections of the river. TWRI began working with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and local stakeholders in 2014 to develop a total maximum daily load (TMDL) for the watershed and identify the amount of bacteria the Tres Palacios could handle and still meet water quality standards. In addition to the TMDL, we led local stakeholder efforts to develop a watershed protection plan (WPP) and TMDL Implementation Plan, which outline the voluntary strategies to achieve water quality goals.
We are now working with local stakeholders to increase participation by local landowners, develop and deliver education materials and programs, and secure additional resources needed to implement strategies identified in the WPP.
